Enugu 2023: Why PDP Delegates Must Not Miss Their Shot At Peter Mbah - Chike Anibeze

Image
In the thick and thin of the upcoming party primaries to herald the 2023 elections, the unfolding scenario for the politicians appear to be anchored on the same old order, but the background expectations of the citizenry seem to suggest the opposite. Representative democracy is important because it gathers the constituent representation of the entire citizenry. However, when representative democracy takes precedence in the functioning of the other power blocks, especially the ‘executive’; it often times creates knowledge gaps in the specific technical areas of function. Technocracy comes in handy to fill the void. There is little doubt that the Nigerian society has gone rudderless in the execution of tasks and clearly devoid of any modicum of technocratic input. Deliberately making wrong choices in fitting candidates for most sensitive positions. Even where the technical depth exists, factors such as sectionalism, religion, clannish instincts and tokenism have not helped matters. A cur

APC, PDP primaries responsible for massive fall of Naira

Image
Aspirants for the two largest political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are vacuuming up dollars around the country ahead of their primaries, causing the naira to depreciate further. According to an evaluation conducted, the dollar has been fluctuating between N550 and N570 for the past two months until hitting an all-time high of N595 on the black market on Thursday. The black market rate, which is significantly higher than the official rate of N415/$, is not recognized by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), but what is constant is that dollar has inflated heavily against the naira. The naira has continued to fall against the dollar on the parallel market, according to this newspaper’s findings, as many people scoop up the limited foreign cash. Many commercial banks are reportedly running out of cash as a result of their inability to meet many customer requests. As the scarcity remains, some are concerned that the currency rate could

Blasphemy: I am not afraid to speak, my position on sharia got me abuses – Atiku

Image
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku, has said he is not afraid to speak on critical issues but that every tweet on his official social media handles must get his approval before publication. Atiku, one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants, said this when he paid a consultative visit to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State at the Government House in Benin. Atiku had earlier condemned the gruesome killing of Miss Deborah Samuel who was accused of blasphemy. The post was soon taken down after a backlash against the former president by some Muslims on social media. According to Atiku, “Every tweet has to get my expressed approval but this one didn’t so I asked them to take it down. “I took a stand about Sharia law and was abused, thrown stones at, but how long did it last? Despite that, I didn’t change my position on that. I am not afraid to take a stand on critical issues,“ NAN quoted him as saying.

A Look Into Peter Mbah's Selfless Determination And His Quest To Serve Enugu State - Chike Anibeze

Image
I read with dismay, the irritating write-ups on the Enugu State governorship candidature of Peter Mbah dotting some of our WhatsApp fora. The attacks and vituperations on this candidate are becoming as nauseating as the shallow thought processes instigating the write-ups. I hate to say that it gives a below average impression of the level of awareness of Ndi-Enugu in the political process. I am constrained to make this piece because I strongly believe that elections are won on aggressive grassroots buildup and not on energy dissipation on twitter and WhatsApp but often we are pushed to join in the stubbornness of the political arguments even in the face of facts. That much is the problem of Nd’Igbo even at the national levels. Peter Obi is easily the most deserving of the presidency in the minds of Nd’Igbo come 2023 and they are unrelenting in dissipating every energy in the social media about it. The north appears calm, surreptitiously watching events and planning their grassroots’ st

I never authorised the purchase of APC forms by any group – Goodluck Jonathan

Image
Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has denied authorising the purchase of presidential forms for him. A Northern group on Monday, May 9, purchased the form for Jonathan, insisting he must run for president in 2023. According to the group, Jonathan is the only Nigerian leader who has taken interest in Almajiris as he built schools for them during his tenure.  In a statement signed by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, the former President said he was not aware and did not authorise any group to purchase the form. The statement reads; “It has come to our notice that a group has purportedly purchased Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms, of the All Progressives Congress APC, in the name of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. We wish to categorically state that Dr. Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it. While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr. Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presid

Engr. Beloved-Dan Anike, the Man Who has Stood for his Generation

Image
Engr. Beloved-Dan Obinna Anike is a man after my own heart. Here is a man, who has stood for his generation, not because he was looking forward to leading on the big stage, but because of sheer love for humanity. He is a Christian in the true sense of a Pastor, who is a shepherd of the people. When I think of Engr. Beloved-Dan Obinna Anike, there are certain words that easily come to mind: thoughtful, brilliant, selfless, sympathetic, public-spirited and gentle. Leadership sits so comfortably on Obinna Anike. Twenty-two years ago, he was voted the Student Union Leader of Nnmadi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK). He was probably the youngest Student Union Leader UNIZIK has ever produced, yet he engendered a Revolution in the lives of the students. Obinna Anike pioneered the Students’ Welfare Scheme and the Work and Study Scheme at UNIZIK. He led a successful struggle for the transformation of UNIZIK from a non-residential to a residential campus. As the community leader and organiser, h

Northern Coalition Purchases APC Presidential Forms For Jonathan

Image
Coalition of Northern groups on Monday arrived at the International Conference Centre in Abuja to purchase the All Progressives Congress’ presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for former President Goodluck Jonathan. Sporting fez caps with the inscription ‘run Jonathan run’, members of the coalition said Jonathan is the most qualified to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. Although Jonathan isn’t a member of the APC, speculations have intensified in recent weeks that he is set to switch from the Peoples Democratic Party to contest for President in 2023. Addressing calls for him to contest in April, Jonathan had told a crowd of supporters to “watch out”. “Yes, you are calling me to come and declare for the 2023 presidency, yes I can’t tell I am declaring; the political process is ongoing, just watch out,” he said at the time. If elected as President again, Jonathan can only serve for one term of four years, according to the constitution. He was first elected in 2011

UK finally recognises IPOB, MASSOB as terrorist groups, bans members from asylum

Image
The government of the United Kingdom has retracted its earlier decision to grant asylum to members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).  The UK had in April last year announced its plans to grant asylum to persecuted members of the separatist groups, as part of its refugee policy published at the time. The policy, at the time, was for asylum to be granted to “persecuted” members of the IPOB and the MASSOB.  However, in a May 2022 update of its asylum policy published on its official website, the UK government said, “If a person has been involved with IPOB (and/or an affiliated group), MASSOB or any other ‘Biafran’ group that incites or uses violence to achieve its aims, decision-makers must consider whether one (or more) of the exclusion clauses under the Refugee Convention is applicable. Persons who commit human rights violations must not be granted asylum. IPOB is proscribed as a terrorist group b

Fayemi joins APC presidential race, unfolds agenda

Image
Ekiti State Governor and Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi will formally declare his intention to run for the position of President of the country on Wednesday in Abuja. His Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, made this known in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday. According to him, Wednesday’s declaration, tagged, ‘Unveiling My Nigeria Agenda’, would lay to rest speculations on whether Fayemi would run for the Presidency or not. Oyebode said his principal had discussed his plan to run for the number one office with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), traditional rulers and political leaders across states in the Federation. The statement was titled, ‘2023: Fayemi Joins Presidential Race, Unfolds Agenda After Nationwide Consultations With Leaders’. It partly read, “Dr Fayemi’s engagements with political and traditional leaders went on side by side with consultations with his colleague governors, especially those elected on the platform of the
